CHS & getting help

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome can cause recurring nausea and vomiting. Other illnesses can look similar; a health professional can assess the cause.

When to get help

Call 911 for chest pain, breathing difficulty or a seizure. If vomiting prevents you keeping fluids down, you feel dizzy, or symptoms worsen, seek medical advice promptly or call Alberta Health Link at 811. [9]

Common symptoms +

Recurring severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain can occur. Repeated vomiting can cause dehydration. [11]

Can hot showers help? +

Some people get temporary relief. That doesn’t confirm CHS or replace medical care. [9]

How do you prevent it from coming back? +

Alberta’s guidance says stopping cannabis completely prevents CHS. Ask a health professional for help with quitting and withdrawal. [9]

What treatment is available? +

Clinicians may give fluids or medication and check for other causes. A home checklist can’t confirm CHS. [9]
